Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: DILLON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: N Impact: Report: Storm King (BE000366) The Storm King Mine is located a short distance northwest of the Sylvia Mine. Workings consist of 1 caved adit, 1 open (fenced) shaft, several pits and trenches, and several dumps. Surface disturbance is less than 1 acre. The Storm King explores a vertical shear zone approximately 6" wide in the Cambrian Flathead Quartzite; the zones strikes N9E. A small cross fault that trends N50E and dips 75NW cuts the shear zone (Geach, 1972). The zone consists of crushed quartzite mineralized by red iron oxides; ore includes lead, gold, and silver (Geach, 1972). Most of the dump rock exhibits limonite and hematite staining. A chip sample from the breccia zone near the portal of the adit assayed 0.15% lead, 0.52 ounces gold, and 0.25 ounces silver (Geach, 1972). This site was discovered pre-World War II; production was recorded in 1951 and 1959. The actual production figures are confidential; the amount was small (Geach, 1972). This site is located on a dry N-S trending ridge; there is no water component. All workings are on USFS land. |
