Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: DILLON Owner: B Impact: Report: Dexter (BE000318) The Dexter workings consist of several shafts connected by a 260' adit, crosscuts, and stopes; all underground workings except 1 shaft (grated and locked) are inaccessible. The total surface disturbance is about 1 1/2 acres. This mine site explores a vein consisting of garnetized limestone in the Devonian Three Forks Formation (Shenon, 1931). The vein is associated with a granodiorite stock. Fracturing and alteration were noted in the wall rock of the adit. Primary ore minerals were partly oxidized galena, pyrite, and tetrahedrite (Geach, 1972). An AIM grab sample assayed 658 ppm lead, 826 ppm zinc, 22 ppm copper, 2.4 ppm silver, trace gold, and 50 ppm arsenic. This mine was purportedly worked in the 1880's and well into this century. No published production figures were found. Judging from the size of the dumps, production must have been fairly substantial. This dry site is located on BLM land; there is no water component. |
