Report: Ermont Group (BE000264/+++) The Ermont Group includes 34 unpatented claims spread over a 1 1/2 square mile area. Major mines (claims) include the Ermont 2, Ermont 19, Golden Gate, Lone Wolf, Yellow Bird or West Ermont, Comstock, and Badger or North Ermont. Most of these mines explore the contact between an andesite sill and Devonian Jefferson-Three Forks Formations (Geach, 1972). The formations exposed in this area dip 23 to 30 degrees east (Geach, 1972). Ore bodies associated with the sill include gold-bearing quartz and iron oxide disseminated in dolomite and disseminations/veinlets along fracture zones in altered andesite (Geach, 1972). This deposit was the largest single lode producer of gold in Beaverhead County for many years; production was recorded in 1932-1933, 1935-1942, 1949-1950, and 1963. Total production was 189,649 tons of ore yielding 4789 pounds of copper, 6999 ounces of silver, and 41,255 ounces of gold. A 100 ton cyanide mill was constructed at this location to process the ore; water was piped 4 miles from Rattlesnake Creek to supply the operation (Sassman, 1941). Only the cement foundations of the mill buildings remain; the mill tailings area covers approximately 2 acres. There is episodic water erosion and some wind erosion of the tailings. All of the mine sites visited in this area were very dry (i.e. there was no water component either on the surface or in the shafts). The mill site and most of the mines in this area are located on BLM land. A claim map of this area and one underground mine map exists in the MBMG files. A plan map of the mill and tailings area was made for the AIM program.
