Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: DILLON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: P Impact: U Report: Legal Tender (BE000258) The Legal Tender Mine is located on a patented claim on the east side of a dry ridgeline. Workings consist of an inclined shaft (now caved) with underground stopes, and several small dumps (Geach, 1972). Total surface disturbance is approximately 1 acre. The workings followed a vein in the Devonian Jefferson Formation; the vein strikes N20E and dips 60SE (Geach, 1972). Ore purportedly consisted of granular lead carbonate with some galena (Geach, 1972). Present-day evidence of mineralization at this site is scant; minor limonite staining is visible on dump and wall rocks. This site was discovered in 1865; production is estimated at $150,000.00 (Shenon, 1931). No accurate record of production history exists (Shenon, 1931). This site is located on a dry hillside; there is no water component. This patented claim is surrounded by USFS land. |
