Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: DILLON Owner: B Impact: Report: Carbonate (BE000174) The Carbonate Mine workings consist of 3 caved shafts and 1 open shaft (gated and locked); total surface disturbance is less than 1 acre. This mine site explores a steeply inclined, north-trending vein in the Cambrian Flathead quartzite. An andesite sill or dike follows the hanging wall of the ore body (Geach, 1972). The primary ore mineral was galena in a gangue of brecciated quartzite, recemented by yellow jasper (Geach, 1972). Limonite staining is found on most dump rock; heavy iron mineralization in veins is found around the open shaft. An AIM grab sample assayed greater than 10,000 ppm lead, 278 ppm zinc, 41 ppm copper, 28 ppm silver, 0.240 ounces of gold, and 616 ppm arsenic. This property was located in the 1890's; in addition to earlier shipments, ore was shipped in 1942, 1949, and 1953. Total reported production was 64 tons of ore yielding 10 ounces of gold, 592 ounces of silver, 10,773 pounds of lead, and 611 pounds of zinc (Geach, 1972). This site is located at the top of a dry NW-SE trending ridge; there is no water component. This site is located on BLM land. |
