Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: JEFFERSON Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020006 Forest or Resource Area: DEERLODGE Owner: M Impact: V Report: Hawkeye Two veins were explored at the Hawkeye Mine. The veins trend N85W and dip steeply north in quartz monzonite (Ruppel, 1963). The veins and workings have been obscured by recent cat work on private land. One dump and a caved portal can be found on national forest land. This was a 300-400 foot crosscut to the southerly vein, and the entire dump is unaltered quartz monzonite. The vein apparently was enriched to high grade silver ore in the shallow oxidized zone, but a sample (JHJS-2) of sulfide vein material with quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, galena, sphalerite, and siderite contained only .03 oz/ton gold, 7.64 oz/ton silver, .57% Cu, 1.33% Pb, and .18% Zn. This crosscut discharges a small amount of water as seeps near the portal, but the water was.......the greatest?............. The northerly vein workings are on private land and are also covered by recent work. Vein material from an old dump contained quartz, tourmaline, and pyrite, and (JHJS-1) assayed at .032 oz/ton gold, 1.76 oz/ton silver, .24% copper, .14% lead, and .055% zinc. Jack Creek impinges on this dump, but water.......... |
