Agency: NF Region District: R1 Ranger District: WISDOM Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020004 Forest or Resource Area: BEAVERHEAD Owner: P Impact: Report: "Mining began in the district about 1869 when Mike Steel, Edward Boyle, and Barney McDonald discovered placer gold in Steel Creek (Sassman, 1941, p. 28). Remains of the early placer operation are clearly visible along Steel Creek where the vallley floor meets outcropping granite bedrock along the mountain slope. Tailings from the old operations consist of cobbles of quartzite, granite, and aplite. The deposit resembles and ancient river channel. Placer production has been very small -- probably not more than a few thousand dollars." Geach, 1972 |
