Agency: BLM Region District: BUTTE Ranger District: Forest Service Tract: Watershed Code: 10020002 Forest or Resource Area: DILLON Owner: P Impact: U Report: Ground Hog (BE000222) The Ground Hog Mine consists of 5 shafts, 1 200' tunnel, 300' of drifting, and several small to moderately sized dumps. This is an active mine employing a cyanide leaching operation. This mine explores a shear zone in the Cambrian Flathead Quartzite; the zone trends N30W and dips 80NE (Geach, 1972). Gangue mineralogy was brecciated and recemented quartzite; ore minerals included gold, silver, lead, and zinc (Geach, 1972). Gangue mineralogy is brecciated and recemented quartzite; ore minerals include gold, silver, lead, and zinc (Geach, 1972). An assay map of the underground workings show a range for gold values from a few cents to $25.00/ton (Geach, 1972). The site was located in 1895 and has probably been intermittently operated since that time; production records are not available (Geach, 1972). This mine consists of 1 patented claim and 6 unpatented claims (Geach, 1972); it is adjacent to BLM land. Geach includes a longitudinal section of this mine and several underground maps in his 1972 publication; additional surface sketch (plan) maps exist in the MBMG files. |
